Much has been made about the new found vigor of the Recovery School District, credited to Superintendent Paul Vallas, after a disappointing and disastrous first year. Much less heralded has been the startling "recovery" of the operations of the Orleans Parish School Board. As the 2008 board president in the final year of a roller coaster four-year term, I can proudly say we too have welcomed and responded to the post-Katrina opportunity to do education better. A recent report on the state of public education in New Orleans notes the stability of academics, achievement and accountability at schools run by the Orleans Parish School Board. The study, led by Tulane University President Scott Cowen, concludes that OPSB run schools are faring better than pre-Katrina, “particularly in the areas of teacher recruitment, class size and operational support.” The report also notes that OPSB-run schools are enjoying that success because of “strong leaders, staff and community relationships”. Finally, the study makes the point that the OPSB has been able to “maintain its desired school size and its low student-teacher ratios, both proven best practices that contribute to a positive learning environment and student achievement.
